Image There are many ways to conserve energy in your home or business with little or no cost. Take a tour of your home to see where you are wasting energy. Follow these and the other tips outlined in this Energy Planner to reduce your consumption, then establish your own conservation plan. Finally, track your results. Energy conservation is everybody's job. Get the family involved!

  • Use automatic controls and reduce temperatures on thermostats, heaters, air conditioners and hot-water heaters.
  • Heat only to 68° F Cool only to 78° F
  • Flush the house with cool night air during warm months and close out morning and midday sunlight.
  • Take advantage of existing or natural light.
  • Close off unused areas.
  • Don't obstruct vents or air returns.
  • Replace filters on a regular schedule.
  • Turn off unused lights and equipment.
  • Seal cracks and replace broken windows.
  • Use dimmers and energy efficient bulbs.
  • Practice regular vehicle and home maintenance.
  • Accelerate smoothly and observe posted speed limits.
